Essaouira is the walled sea town most people see for four hours on a day trip from Marrakech. That is the wrong way to do it. The coaches leave in the late afternoon, and the medina, the ramparts and the fish port go quiet just as the light gets good. Come by bus from Marrakech, about three hours, and stay two or three nights: one for the town, one for the beach south to Diabat, one for the surf at Sidi Kaouki.
When to go
Mild all year; the Atlantic keeps it cool. From about April to September the trade wind blows hard most afternoons, strongest in July and August: great for kitesurfing, gritty on the beach. Spring and autumn give steady but gentler wind. Winter is calmer and cooler, fine for the medina. The Gnaoua and World Music Festival fills the town in late June (25 to 27 June in 2026).

Mistakes to avoid
- The UK FCDO says terrorists are likely to try to attack in Morocco, including at tourist sites and crowded places. Essaouira is not singled out, and no part of Morocco is under 'advise against travel'.
- Strong currents and unexpected waves happen on this coast, and many beaches have little or no lifeguard cover. Swim only where locals do, and never in the wind-whipped afternoon surf if you are not a strong swimmer.
- Unofficial 'guides' work the medina gates. Licensed guides carry an official badge. Agree every price, at the fish grills especially, before anything is cooked or carried.
Ways to spend less
- Stay the night. The day-trip coaches leave in the late afternoon and the ramparts at sunset are yours.
- Buy fish straight off the boats in the morning and have a port stall grill it; agree the price first and it is the cheapest good meal in Morocco.
- Book the Marrakech bus the day before. Same price, and you avoid the sold-out next departure.
