A 1,000-year-old pilgrimage path to Kumano Hongu Taisha, one of only two UNESCO-listed pilgrim routes in the world (the other is the Camino de Santiago). The classic Nakahechi runs about 38 km from Takijiri-oji to Hongu: 13.3 km to Chikatsuyu on day one (about 1,010 m up), then 24.5 km to Hongu (about 1,100 m up, 9-12 hours), which most people split or shorten by bus. Nights are in family-run minshuku with dinner, breakfast and a hot-spring bath. Quieter, cheaper and far more rural than Kyoto's temple circuit, and a better mountain walk than Mount Fuji's crowded summit trail.
