Takayama & the Hida Region
A preserved Edo-era old town, a working morning market and thatched-roof villages in the Japan Alps — at a fraction of Kyoto's tourist density.

Takayama gets the Kyoto experience right without the Kyoto crowds: wooden merchant houses, sake breweries and lantern-lit streets you can actually walk down. It's also the gateway to Shirakawa-go's gassho-zukuri farmhouses and the Japan Alps behind it. Japan is not a cheap country to visit from India, so this is the deliberately budget version — rail passes, guesthouses over hotels, and konbini food instead of restaurant tabs.
Instead of Kyoto. Best for solo travellers, couples and groups. Best months: Jan–May, Sep–Dec.
When to go
April and October-November are best — spring bloom or autumn foliage with mild days. June-August is hot, humid and rainy, and mountain roads can shut with heavy snow from late December to March.

Eating
Genuinely hard. Dashi (fish stock) underlies most 'vegetarian' dishes — miso soup, soba broth, even some vegetable tempura batter — and staff often don't count it as non-veg. Learn the phrase for 'no meat, no fish' before you go, and lean on konbini onigiri (check for fish flakes), plain rice, edamame and visibly plain vegetable tempura.

What goes wrong here, and how to do it cheaper
What goes wrong:
Japan requires Indian passport holders to hold a visa — it is not visa-free or visa-on-arrival. Apply through VFS Japan and check the current rules before booking, since online e-visa access for Indian applicants has been changing.
The Shirakawa-go bus sells out in cherry blossom and autumn foliage weeks — reserve the return seat, not just the outbound one.
Winter (Dec-Feb) is genuinely cold and roads to viewpoints can close with snow — check conditions before planning a ropeway trip or onsen day.
How to do it cheaper:
The Miyagawa morning market runs even in light snow — one of the few genuinely local, unstaged markets left in touristy Japan.
Skip the JR Pass if Takayama is your only stop — point-to-point tickets from Nagoya work out cheaper than the pass math.
Konbini food here isn't a compromise — onigiri, tamago sando and coffee is a legitimately good ₹350 breakfast, and it's how you survive Japan's food prices without going hungry.
