Matsumoto has one of Japan's few castle keeps that is a National Treasure, plus storehouse lanes, a Meiji-era school and a Yayoi Kusama-filled art museum, all within walking distance of the station. You get the old-Japan feeling people go to Kyoto for, in a small, calm city where hostel beds start around €15. Come by limited express from Nagoya or Shinjuku, or save with the highway bus from Busta Shinjuku. Two days covers the city; add a third for the Daio Wasabi Farm or, until mid-November, Kamikochi.

Mistakes to avoid
- UK travel advice (updated 28 Aug 2026) does not advise against travel to any part of Japan except the restricted zone around Fukushima Daiichi. Japan is in a major earthquake zone; follow instructions in hotels and stations.
- Bear sightings and attacks have increased in mountainous and forested parts of Japan. Do not walk alone where bears have been seen, take all rubbish with you, and report sightings, especially around Kamikochi.
- Heavy rain and typhoons (June to December, peaking July to September) can flood and close mountain roads and rail lines. Kamikochi buses need advance reservation and stop after 15 November.
Ways to spend less
- The ¥2,320 Town Sneaker PLUS 24-hour pass covers a day of buses plus the castle (¥1,300) and the Kaichi School (¥700), so it pays for itself.
- The highway bus from Shinjuku (from ¥4,100) is about ¥1,600 cheaper than the Azusa train.
- Booking the castle as an e-ticket saves ¥100 a person, and Nakamachi, Nawate Street and the castle park cost nothing.
