Most visitors to Korea's south coast stop at Busan's beaches and markets. Half an hour inland by KTX is Gyeongju, capital of the Silla kingdom for close to a thousand years, now a low-rise town built around royal tombs, palace ponds and a stone observatory. The centre is flat and walkable; city buses run out to Bulguksa temple and the Seokguram grotto on the hill above it. Two nights is right: one day for the town, one for Bulguksa and the hills.

Why Gyeongju, instead of Busan: A thousand-year royal capital where grassy burial mounds the size of hills sit between the cafés, and the best sights cost less than a coffee.

When to go

April (cherry blossom) and October-November (autumn leaves) are the best and busiest months; book beds early for blossom weekends. July and August are hot, humid and wet. Winter is cold and dry but clear, and the town is quiet.

Know before you go

CashSmall amounts for buses (cash fares are higher) and street snacks.
Cards & UPICards work almost everywhere. Get a T-money card for buses: it is cheaper than cash.
Phone signalBuy an eSIM or a SIM at the airport. Coverage is excellent.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Cherry-blossom weekends in early April fill every bed in town. Book early or come on weekdays.
  • Singyeongju KTX station is far from the centre; allow 30-40 minutes by bus, or take the intercity bus from Busan instead.
  • Seokguram is reached by an hourly bus up a mountain road. Check the return time before you go up. The UK FCDO has no advice against travel to South Korea.

Ways to spend less

  • Do the tombs and the observatory by day, then Donggung and Wolji at dusk: they are next to each other and the lights come on as you arrive.
  • Take the intercity bus from Busan. It is cheaper than the KTX and drops you in the middle of town.
  • Bulguksa, the museum, Cheomseongdae and the tomb park are free. A full day of heritage costs you only bus fare.
