The real Edo-era road between Kyoto and Edo, walked between two preserved post towns, then over Torii Pass to Narai. Day 1 is Magome to Tsumago (about 8 km, 2.5 to 3 hours) and a night in a Tsumago minshuku. Day 2 is a train hop up the valley. Day 3 is Yabuhara to Narai over the 1,197 m Torii Pass (about 6 km, 3 to 3.5 hours), the steepest Kiso section. Send your bag ahead: drop it at the Magome or Tsumago tourist office between 8:30 and 11:30 and collect it at the other one from 13:00 to 17:00, for ¥1,000 a bag (about ₹610) from 20 March to November. Out of season it is ¥4,500 for up to three bags. The cost is a DIY total from Magome: two nights in a minshuku with dinner and breakfast (about ¥12,000 to ¥18,000 a person a night), lunches, local buses and trains, and one forwarded bag. A gentler, far emptier alternative to the crowded Kyoto temple walks.
