The Shree Jagannatha Temple, or Srimandir, is the 12th-century home of Jagannatha, Lord of the Universe, worshipped with his brother Balabhadra, sister Subhadra and Chakra Sudarshan. Puri is one of the four Char Dham of Hinduism, and the temple's kitchen prepares the Mahaprasad offered to the deities and shared at Ananda Bazar within the temple. The temple's rituals are carried out by hereditary sevayats, and the deities' wooden forms are renewed in the Nabakalebara ceremony. It is administered by the Shree Jagannatha Temple Administration (SJTA) under the Government of Odisha.

Where to stay and eat

Stay

The SJTA runs its own guesthouses on Grand Road: Nilachala Bhakta and Yatri Niwas next to the temple (AC and non-AC rooms and dormitories), Shree Gundicha Bhakta Niwas, Neeladri Bhakta Niwas and Purushottam Bhakta Niwas. Book only on the official portal stayatpurijagannatha.in; the SJTA warns of a fake booking site. An older report gave ₹1,254 for AC and ₹660 for non-AC rooms; check current rates. Many private budget hotels line the beach road at Swargadwar. Rath Yatra week sells out months ahead.

Food

The thing to eat is Mahaprasad from Ananda Bazar inside the temple: rice, dal, vegetable dishes and sweets cooked in earthen pots in the temple kitchen and offered to the deities. The SJTA says not to carry cooked food or eat non-vegetarian food in the temple. Outside, Puri's lanes sell khaja (the temple's flaky sweet) and simple Odia thalis.

Local tip: Leave your phone and anything leather at your guesthouse and walk to the Lion's Gate. You skip the deposit stand, and you can't be turned back at the barricade for something in your pocket.

Visitors of other faiths can see the temple's exterior, the Aruna Stambha and the Rath Yatra on Grand Road. No phones, leather or footwear (must book): Mobile phones, cameras, electronic gadgets, umbrellas, leather items and footwear are not allowed inside. Free shoe and mobile stands are near the Lion's Gate barricade and near the temple office. A total phone ban was re-announced in October 2025. Dress code (must book): Since 1 January 2024 the SJTA has refused entry to devotees in shorts, half pants, torn jeans, skirts and sleeveless dresses. Wear clean, traditional clothing that covers shoulders and knees. Darshan is free; check closures: Regular darshan needs no ticket. A paid Parimanik darshan (closer darshan at set times) has existed; its current price is not published, so ask at the temple office. There is no darshan for about 15 days after Snana Purnima.
