Kalpa sits at about 2,960 m, 7 km and a few hairpins above Reckong Peo, the Kinnaur district town where the buses, ATMs and market are. You come for the view: the Kinner Kailash range fills the window at sunrise, and the village below it is all slate roofs, carved temples and apple trees. Shimla and Manali give you a mall road and traffic; Kalpa gives you the high Himalaya from your bed for the same bus fare. It is a long day on the bus from Shimla, so plan at least two nights, and add Sangla and Chitkul for a four-to-five-day Kinnaur loop.

When to go

Mistakes to avoid
- NH-5 between Rampur and Reckong Peo (Nigulsari, Tapri, Jeori) shuts for hours or days after landslides; it was closed at Nigulsari on 6 August 2026. Keep a spare day and check road status before you travel.
- Indian citizens need no permit for Kalpa or Kinnaur. Foreigners need no permit for Kalpa either, but need one to go beyond Jangi towards Nako and Spiti (protected area); apply at the SDM or DC office in Reckong Peo.
- In winter (December to March) expect deep snow, nights to about -20°C, short road closures and many places shut. Snow can come as late as April.
Ways to spend less
- Sleep in Kalpa, not Reckong Peo. It costs about the same and you get Kinner Kailash from the window; Peo is only a ₹30 bus away for the ATM.
- Take the early Shimla bus and sit on the right going up: the Sutlej gorge is on that side for much of the way.
- Come in late September or October: apple harvest, clear skies, and the monsoon slides are mostly over.
