The bazaar side and the Virupaksha temple. The island side, where you sleep, is across the river.

Short answer

About ₹9,810 for two people for three days in Hampi from Bengaluru. That is the sleeper train both ways, the local bus to Hampi Bazaar, two nights in a basic double on the island side, a scooter for two days with fuel, three simple meals a day, the coracle across the river and the Vittala ticket. That is about ₹4,905 each. Add the optional coracle ride on the river (a separate ₹300 each, not the ₹50 crossing above) and it is ₹10,410 for two.

Hampi is one of the best couple trips in South India and one of the cheapest. The room splits, the scooter splits, and the best things there, Matanga Hill at sunrise and Hemakuta Hill at sunset, cost nothing. What a couple pays for is the train, one bed, and food.

Every price below comes from Trip Under's Hampi page. Train and bus fares there are planning figures, so check the live fare when you book. You book every piece yourself: Trip Under is not an agency and takes no commission.

Two people, three days on the ground, two nights in a room. You leave Bengaluru on the night train and come home on the night train, so the train is your bed on the other two nights.

Getting there: the night train, then the bus

The sleeper train runs SBC Bengaluru → Hosapete Jn, about 8–9 h. Trip Under's planning fare is ₹1,100 per person each way. Go overnight both ways: it saves two nights of rooms, which for a couple is the single biggest saving on the trip. The page's own advice is to book 60 days out, because it fills.

Bengaluru to your island-side room

The bus runs every 30 minutes from the Hosapete stand. Shared autos cost about four times as much.

If the train is full, the AC sleeper bus from Bengaluru to Hosapete takes 7–8 h at about ₹2,000 each way. For a couple that adds ₹3,600 to the trip, and the total goes over ₹10,000.

Where a couple should sleep

Krishna Pushkarani on the bazaar side. You can reach every ruin like this by scooter from the island.

Hampi has two sides, and they are two different trips. The bazaar side is temple town: vegetarian, dry and asleep by ten. Across the river at Virupapur Gaddi are the cafés, the hammocks and the sunsets. Most couples want the island side.

StayWhereFrom (per night, per room)Notes
Basic doubleVirupapur Gaddi (island side)₹900Cafés, hammocks, sunsets. Remember the coracle stops at dusk.
HomestayAnegundi village₹1,600The village rather than the strip. Usually cheaper walked into than booked online.

The one rule on the island side. The coracle crossing stops running around sunset. Be on the wrong side at 8 pm and it is a 30 km road detour. With a scooter you can ride round by the bridge, but plan your evening around the river anyway.

Guesthouses on the island side are 30 to 40 percent cheaper walked into in September than booked online in December. Book the first night if you are arriving in season, and decide on the second once you have seen the street.

Food and getting around

Hampi is vegetarian and dry: the temple town serves no meat and no alcohol. That makes it one of the cheapest places in India to eat well.

WhatPriceNotes
Idli, vada and chai at a bazaar stall₹45Breakfast, before you climb Matanga Hill.
Unlimited veg thali₹100Rice, sambar, two vegetables, curd, pickle, refills. Beats à la carte every single time.
Island-side café plate₹250Banana pancakes and a river view for roughly double the bazaar price. Worth it once.
Bun, banana and chai at sunset₹30The ₹195 day: stall breakfast, thali lunch, this, and refilled water.

The bill above uses a stall breakfast, a thali for lunch and another for dinner, and a bun and chai at sunset. Swap one dinner for the island café plate at ₹250 each, which the page calls worth it once, and the total becomes ₹10,110 for two.

For getting around, take a scooter. The page calls it the right answer here: ₹400 a day, licence required, and check the brakes before you pay. A bicycle is ₹150 a day and fine for the bazaar-side ruins, but it is brutal after 11 am in any month. One scooter carries both of you, so the couple saving is real.

November to February is the season — cool mornings, cold nights, everything walkable. April to June is 40°C on bare granite with no shade, and genuinely unsafe for children and older parents.

For a couple, Jan–Feb, Nov–Dec is the window. April to June is not a cheap-season bargain: the page calls the heat on bare granite a hazard, with no shade and no water on the trails.
