Is Albania Cheap to Visit? What a Day Really Costs in 2026

Albania has a reputation as Europe's budget country. Our data says that is true in the mountains and only half true in the old towns. Here is what a day costs in the Albanian Alps and in the UNESCO towns of Berat and Gjirokastër, at three travel styles, and where Albania sits among the other underrated places in Europe.

Berat, the town of a thousand windows: a UNESCO old town where people still live inside the castle walls.

Short answer

Yes in the mountains, fairly in the towns. In the Albanian Alps (Theth & Valbona) a mid-range day costs about ₹2,350 per person with dinner and breakfast at a guesthouse, the cheapest of the ten underrated places in Europe we list. In the UNESCO old towns of Berat and Gjirokastër a mid-range day is about ₹4,700: cheaper than Coimbra, Tartu or Asturias, but about the same as Wrocław or Plovdiv. Flights to Tirana are not included.

The answer depends on where you go. Albania's two underrated trips on Trip Under are very different: stone villages and a mountain pass in the north, where half board is the only way to eat, and two Ottoman towns in the south, where you pay town prices for a guesthouse in the old quarter. Both replace somewhere more famous: Theth instead of the fast-developing coast at Ksamil, Berat and Gjirokastër instead of Dubrovnik. All costs below are per person, on the ground.

What a day costs, at three budgets

Per person: beds, food, local transport and entry fees. One person; two sharing a room pay less each. Flights to Tirana not included.
TripShoestring a dayMid-range a dayComfort a dayShoestring, 4 daysMid-range, 4 daysComfort, 4 days
Theth & Valbona (Alps)₹1,600₹2,350₹4,200₹6,400₹9,400₹16,800
Berat & Gjirokastër₹3,000₹4,700₹7,900₹12,000₹18,800₹31,600

Shoestring means a dorm bed or a tent, cheap local food and the bus. Mid-range is a private room in a guesthouse, local restaurants and all the entry fees. Comfort is a hotel room and restaurant dinners.

Theth (Albania)₹2,350

Berat (Albania)₹4,700
Ohrid₹4,800
Košice₹4,800
Coimbra₹6,600
Tartu₹7,400
Asturias₹7,500

Mid-range: private room, local food, local transport, entry fees. Trip Under's place data.

The Alps are the cheapest on the list by a long way, at ₹2,350 a day, because the guesthouse price includes dinner and breakfast and there is nowhere else to eat in the valley. Berat and Gjirokastër rank #4 of 10: Wrocław and Plovdiv come out slightly cheaper at mid-range, and Ohrid and Košice cost about the same. On a shoestring, though, Ohrid (₹2,100) and Košice (₹2,800) undercut Berat (₹3,000). Against Coimbra (₹6,600) or Tartu (₹7,400) Albania is clearly cheaper.

Berat & Gjirokastër: what things cost

Two UNESCO Ottoman towns where people still live inside the castle walls: Berat's thousand white windows and Gjirokastër's grey stone roofs. Fly into Tirana (TIA), take the airport bus to the South-North terminal (about ₹405), then the bus to Berat: about 2 h 15 m, about ₹650, cash on board. Two nights in each town is right. Best months: May–Jun, Sep.

Room prices are per room per night. Castle and museum fees are not published clearly online: check at the gate.

Theth & Valbona: the cheapest mountains in Europe

The mountains behind it are not. The Theth–Valbona crossing is a six-hour walk over a pass between two valleys that until recently had no road at all, and the way in is a three-hour ferry up Lake Koman through a canyon so narrow the boat feels wedged. By our numbers it is the best-value mountain trip in Europe.

Getting there: Shkodër is the staging town. From there, the classic way in is the furgon, the Lake Koman ferry and a minibus to Valbona (9 h, about ₹2,200), or a direct furgon to Theth (3 h, about ₹1,200). From Montenegro, the bus from Podgorica to Shkodër is about ₹700. Season: mid-June to early October; most of the valley shuts from late October.

Half board is dinner and breakfast: there is nowhere else to eat in the valley.

The Theth to Valbona walk is one day, six to seven hours, over a 1,795 m pass. No permit, waymarked throughout, about ₹900 per person from the base. Book both guesthouses before you set off, because beds are limited in August, and pay for the luggage transfer so you walk with a day pack. Weather on the pass turns fast; in cloud the waymarks are hard to follow.

Six ways to keep Albania cheap

  1. Carry lek in small notes. Buses, castle tickets and small guesthouses mostly take cash only, and neither Theth nor Valbona has an ATM. Get cash in Shkodër or Tirana.
  2. Visit on the last Sunday of the month. State museums and castles are free that day; under-12s are always free, and students and pensioners pay less.
  3. Stay in the old quarters. It costs a little more than the new towns, but you see Berat and Gjirokastër at dusk, after the day-trippers leave.
  4. Catch the 14:00 bus. It is the only direct bus listed from Berat to Gjirokastër; miss it and you go via Tirana or Fier.
  5. Do the Alps as a loop. Koman ferry in, the pass on foot, the Theth road out: you never repeat a journey.
  6. Go in May, June or September. July and August are hot on Berat's cobbles, and wildfire risk runs from April to October.
