Theth & Valbona
Two stone villages either side of a 1,800 m pass, a ferry up a flooded canyon to reach them, and guesthouse beds for ₹1,500.
Albania's coast is being built over quickly. The mountains behind it are not. The Theth–Valbona crossing is a six-hour walk over a pass between two valleys that until recently had no road at all, and the way in is a three-hour ferry up Lake Koman through a canyon so narrow the boat feels wedged. Guesthouses at both ends include dinner and breakfast. It is the best-value mountain trip in Europe.

When to go
Mid-June to early October. The pass holds snow into June and becomes impassable again by late October, when most guesthouses close for the winter.

Eating
Easy. Mountain cooking here is built on bread, cheese, yoghurt, beans, peppers and stewed vegetables, and guesthouses are used to accommodating walkers. Byrek with spinach or cheese is everywhere. Vegans should flag it early — dairy is in almost everything.

What goes wrong here, and how to do it cheaper
What goes wrong:
Weather on the pass turns fast. In cloud the waymarks are hard to follow and people get lost every season.
Guesthouses in both valleys are cash only and there is no ATM in either. Bring enough for your whole stay.
Most of the valley shuts down from late October to mid-June. Turning up in May means finding nothing open.
How to do it cheaper:
Book both guesthouses before you start walking. Bed supply in Theth and Valbona is genuinely limited in August.
Pay the ₹900 luggage transfer. Carrying a full pack over the pass turns a lovely walk into a long day.
Do the Koman ferry in, the pass on foot, and the Theth road out — you never repeat a journey.
