Ohrid is the lake-and-church postcard people go to Bled for, at roughly half the price and with far more history: a UNESCO town of Byzantine churches, a Roman theatre and a medieval fortress above clear water. It is North Macedonia's main resort, so it is busy in July and August; go in May, June, September or early October and you get the same lake with room to breathe. Fly into Skopje and take a three-and-a-half-hour bus. Three days, one of them for St Naum or the Galičica ridge.

Why Ohrid, instead of Lake Bled: A clifftop chapel over one of Europe's oldest lakes, Byzantine frescoes in every second church, and a fortress walk for the price of a coffee.

When to go

Come in May-June or September-early October: highs of 20-25°C, and none of the peak crowds. July and August are hottest (about 28°C), the Ohrid Summer Festival runs mid-July to 20 August, and rooms and boats fill. Wildfire risk runs April to October and forest areas can be closed in summer. November to February is cold and wet but quiet and cheap.

Mistakes to avoid

  • UK travel advice (updated 13 Aug 2026) flags wildfires from April to October; the government often bans entry to forests in the hottest months. Check before hiking Galičica.
  • July and August are packed and prices jump, especially during the Ohrid Summer Festival (mid-July to 20 August).
  • Schengen-zone borders now use the EU Entry/Exit System; UK advice warns of longer waits if you continue into Greece or elsewhere in the EU.

Ways to spend less

  • Visit in late May, June or September: Bled-style views without the crowds, and guesthouse prices drop.
  • Take the local bus to St Naum one way and the boat back: the boat views without paying twice.
  • Most of the best sights, including Kaneo from outside and the Roman theatre, cost nothing.
