Plovdiv gives you the ancient-city feeling people go to Athens for, at a fraction of the crowds and cost. The Roman theatre, the stadium under the main street and the mosaic basilica are all a short walk apart, and the Old Town's Revival-era houses sit right above them. Fly into Sofia and take a two-hour bus or train. Two full days covers it; add a third for Bachkovo Monastery in the Rhodope foothills.

Why Plovdiv, instead of Athens: A Roman theatre you can sit in for the price of a coffee, a stadium under the shopping street, and painted Revival houses on three hills.

When to go

May and September are the sweet spot: warm, not hot. July and August average daytime highs around 32°C, and Bulgaria is on regular wildfire alert in summer and early autumn. Winter is cold (January highs around 5-8°C) but the sites stay open. Many Old Town house-museums close on Mondays.
