Meteora Monasteries
Six working Orthodox monasteries built directly onto sheer sandstone pillars above the Thessalian plain — the same monastic tradition as Mount Athos, but open to everyone. Athos survives as a self-governing monastic republic that only pre-approved male pilgrims can enter with an advance permit; Meteora is the practical way to see that world of Orthodox monastic architecture up close, in monasteries that are still active, not museums.

Where to stay
Kastraki, the village directly below the rock pillars, has cheaper family-run rooms than Kalambaka town centre, from around ₹2,800-4,300 (€30-45) a night; book ahead for weekends and July-August.
Food
Tavernas in Kastraki and Kalambaka serve grilled meats, pites, and regional Thessaly dishes for €8-12 a meal; several have terraces with direct views of the rock pillars.
Local tip: Walk the old monk paths connecting Rousanou to the other clusters instead of only taking the road — the trail gives close-up views of the pillars the road misses, and costs nothing.
