Lalibela Rock-Hewn Churches
Eleven churches carved downward out of solid volcanic rock in a working Ethiopian Orthodox pilgrimage town — not ruins, but active churches with resident priests, chanting, and pilgrims wrapped in white shawls. It's the site most often compared to Jerusalem's Church of the Holy Sepulchre for its significance to Ethiopian Christians, without the queues, barriers, and crowd management of the real Jerusalem circuit.

Where to stay
Budget guesthouses cluster near the Northern Cluster entrance, from roughly ₹1,300-2,200 ($15-25) a night with breakfast and hot water; book ahead if visiting during Genna or Timkat.
Food
Simple Ethiopian fare — injera with shiro or misir wat — is widely available at local restaurants for ₹150-350 a meal; hotel restaurants charge more for a similar menu.
Local tip: The Southern Cluster around Bete Giyorgis is quietest right after the Northern Cluster opens at dawn, before the mid-morning wave of Addis-bound flight arrivals reaches the site.
