People come for cool weather in a hot state: pine plantations along the Doluri river, coffee and pepper gardens, the Hill View Park and viewpoint, and the Midubanda waterfall down 150-odd steps. The forest department's nature camp, run with the local village committee, is the reliable place to stay and includes all meals. Two nights is right; it is a long drive in.

Mistakes to avoid
- Kandhamal is a left-wing extremism (Maoist) area. The UK FCDO tells visitors to Odisha to seek local advice on LWE-affected areas. Security operations continued in the Daringbadi forests through 2026 (an arms dump was found under Daringbadi police station in August 2026). Stay on main roads, travel by day, and ask the camp or local police before going to remote spots.
- Morning fog makes the ghat roads slippery. Arrive before dark.
- Frost is no longer reliable. Recent winters have been much milder than the 'Kashmir of Odisha' label suggests.
Ways to spend less
- Take the train to Berhampur (2S from ₹105) and a shared or split taxi for the last 119 km, instead of six hours by road from Bhubaneswar.
- The nature camp's price includes three meals for two, which matters in a town with few places to eat.
- Go on a weekday in December or January for the coldest mornings without the weekend crowd from Berhampur and Bhubaneswar.
