Zuluk is a small army-and-yak village at about 10,000 ft on the old trade route from Kalimpong to Tibet. Above it the road loops up through 32 hairpins to Thambi, Lungthung, Nathang valley and Kupup. It is a restricted area: Indian citizens need a Protected Area Permit, and only Sikkim-registered taxis with local drivers may go up. Foreign nationals are not currently allowed. Two nights is right: one in Zuluk, then the high road over to Kupup and down to Gangtok or back.

Why Zuluk & the Old Silk Route, instead of Gangtok: Thirty-two hairpin bends stacked up a mountainside, a village of 36 homestays, and Kanchenjunga at sunrise from Thambi.

When to go

October and November give the clearest Kanchenjunga views. March to May is second best, with rhododendrons in bloom. June to August brings landslides and possible permit stops; avoid July and August. December to February the route is under snow, roads are often blocked from January, and the Kupup high road is most likely shut December to March.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Foreign nationals are not currently allowed to visit Zuluk or the Silk Route high road, even with a Sikkim Restricted Area Permit.
  • Indian citizens need a Protected Area Permit: two passport photos and an ID photocopy (Aadhaar, Voter ID or passport; PAN not accepted). Rongli's office shuts early and is closed Sundays.
  • Zuluk is about 10,000 ft and the road climbs to 13,500 ft. Sleep the first night in Zuluk, not Nathang, and descend if a headache worsens.

Ways to spend less

  • Come from the Rongli side and get the permit there yourself, or through your Zuluk homestay. It costs a fraction of a Gangtok agency's ₹500-700.
  • Fill the taxi with four people. The car is the main cost; split four ways, the trip is cheap.
  • Go in late October: clear skies, Kanchenjunga at sunrise, roads open, and cheaper than the April rhododendron season.
