Tawang is a Monpa Buddhist town high in western Arunachal, built around the great Tawang Monastery. Getting there is half the trip: about 320 km from Tezpur and 450 km from Guwahati, over Sela Pass, with Bomdila and Dirang on the way. Indian citizens need an Inner Line Permit, done online in minutes; foreigners need a Protected Area Permit through a registered tour operator. Give it six days from Guwahati: two on the road up with a night in Dirang, two in Tawang, two back.

When to go
March to May and late September to November are the clear, dry windows. June to August is monsoon: landslides on the Bomdila and Sela roads are common. December to February is cold with snow at Sela and Bumla; the Sela tunnel, open since March 2024, keeps the road to Tawang open in winter, but Madhuri Lake and Bumla can shut after snow.

Mistakes to avoid
- Indian citizens must have an Inner Line Permit before crossing into Arunachal at Bhalukpong. Apply at eilp.arunachal.gov.in only; ignore look-alike agent sites.
- Foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit (USD 30 royalty), applied through an approved Arunachal tour operator. Bumla and Madhuri Lake are generally not open to foreigners.
- Sela is about 4,170 m. Break the trip at Dirang, drink water, and come down if a headache gets worse. June to August landslides can close the road for a day or more.
Ways to spend less
- Sleep a night at Dirang on the way up. You arrive in Tawang rested and with far less altitude trouble.
- Get your Bumla/Madhuri Lake permit at the DC office on your first afternoon, then share the permit taxi with others from your homestay.
- Go in late October or early November: clear skies, open roads, and none of the summer crowds.
