Tawang Nearest Railway Station: Guwahati, Rangapara North or Bhalukpong, and the Road Up

Tawang has no railway, and the nearest station with real trains is still more than 300 km away. The district's own website names Guwahati as the main railhead, with Rangapara North and Bhalukpong as feeders. Here are the stations, the trains and fares by class, the road over Sela Pass, and the permits you need before you set off.

Short answer

Tawang has no railway station. The district's website names Guwahati (GHY) as the main railhead, about 423 km by road, with Rangapara North (RPAN, about 313 km) and Bhalukpong (BHNG, about 268 km) as closer feeder stations. Whichever you pick, the road up over Sela Pass takes 14 to 16 hours from Guwahati or Tezpur, and a night in Dirang or Bomdila is advised. Indians need an Inner Line Permit (₹300 for up to 3 days, ₹500 for 4–14 days); foreigners need a Protected Area Permit.

Tawang is a Monpa Buddhist town around one of the largest monasteries in India, close to the Bhutan and Tibet borders. The journey there is the adventure: no train, no working airport nearby, and a long mountain road with Sela Pass in the middle.

How we worked it out. On 6 November 2026 we read the Tawang district's own How to reach page, ConfirmTkt's lowest fares per class for travel on 7 November, train times on erail, and road distances from OpenStreetMap routing. Routing assumes clear roads, so we give the district's real travel times alongside. You book every piece yourself: Trip Under is not an agency.

The usual way up

The district advises a night at Dirang or Bomdila; Dirang sits about 1,500 m up, which also helps with the altitude.

Shared Sumo, broken journeyTezpur → Dirang, night, then Dirang → Tawang2 daysnot confirmedThe sane way: sleep at Dirang (about 1,500 m) before Sela Pass. Check the Dirang-Tawang seat fare locally.

The shared Sumo is how most people go: about ₹1,650 a seat from Guwahati, or about ₹1,100 from Tezpur in Trip Under's plan. A travel blog checked in October 2026 put Tezpur seats at ₹1,000–1,300. We could not confirm the state-run APSTS bus timetable or fare. A helicopter service from Guwahati runs on set days in good weather; we found no official current fare.

The Sela tunnel opened in March 2024, but December to February still brings heavy snow on the high road, so allow spare days in winter.

March to May and late September to November are the clear, dry windows. June to August is monsoon: landslides on the Bomdila and Sela roads are common. December to February is cold with snow at Sela and Bumla; the Sela tunnel, open since March 2024, keeps the road to Tawang open in winter, but Madhuri Lake and Bumla can shut after snow.
