Short answer
About ₹12,300 per person for six days from Guwahati on a shoestring, and about ₹21,300 mid-range, travelling by shared Sumo both ways. A couple at mid-range pays about ₹18,100 each. Indian citizens must get an Inner Line Permit online before crossing into Arunachal. Foreigners need a Protected Area Permit through a registered tour operator.
Tawang is the big Himalayan trip the Northeast does better than the famous names. Gulmarg gets the crowds. Tawang gets India's largest monastery, a frozen lake beside a high pass, and a two-day road that is half the reason to go. It is not cheap like a South Indian weekend. The road is long, the daily cost is higher, and some prices on the way are still unconfirmed. Here is what we do know.
Prices come from Trip Under's Tawang page, checked against official and travel sources on 16 October 2026. Where we could not confirm a price, we say so. You book every piece yourself: Trip Under is not an agency.

The permits: do this before you leave Guwahati
- Indian citizens need an Inner Line Permit (ILP) before crossing into Arunachal at Bhalukpong. Apply at eilp.arunachal.gov.in only, and ignore look-alike agent sites. Arunachal Tourism says the tourist eILP is valid for up to 14 days, and children under 14 are exempt. It can also be issued at Arunachal House counters in Guwahati, Tezpur, Kolkata and Delhi.
- The ILP fee is not shown on the official portal page, and other sources disagree. Check it on the portal when you apply.
- Foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit, with a USD 30 royalty, applied through an approved Arunachal tour operator. Bumla and Madhuri Lake are generally not open to foreigners.
- Bumla Pass and Madhuri (Sangestar) Lake need a separate permit from the DC office in Tawang, stamped by the Army, with your vehicle number on it. Indian citizens only. A ₹100-per-head Bumla fee has been reported. Apply the day before.
Get the Bumla permit on your first afternoon. Then share the permit taxi with others from your homestay. The taxi is the expensive part, and the permit carries the vehicle number, so sort both together.
Getting there: the shared Sumo
There is no train to Tawang. The road is the trip. You have three ways up, all by shared Sumo, a jeep that leaves when it is full.
| Option | Route | Time | Fare (one way) | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|---|

Guwahati to Tawang, the sane way
About 450 km from Guwahati and 320 km from Tezpur. Sleeping at Dirang, about 1,500 m, before Sela is the page's strong advice.
The direct Sumo leaves Guwahati at 5:30 to 6 am, from ISBT Betkuchi or Paltan Bazar, and takes 14-16 h. It is long and cramped, and most people break it. Via Tezpur, Sumos leave the ASTC stand only at 5:30 to 6 am, at ₹1,100 a seat (₹1,000 to ₹1,200 reported). Book the evening before. The Guwahati to Tezpur bus fare is not on our page, so check it locally.
The Sela tunnel, open since March 2024, cut the Tezpur to Tawang drive by about 90 minutes and keeps the road open in winter. Ask your driver to stop at Sela Lake on the old pass road if it is open.

March to May and late September to November are the clear, dry windows. June to August is monsoon: landslides on the Bomdila and Sela roads are common. December to February is cold with snow at Sela and Bumla; the Sela tunnel, open since March 2024, keeps the road to Tawang open in winter, but Madhuri Lake and Bumla can shut after snow.
- Altitude. Sela is about 4,170 m. Break the trip at Dirang, drink water, and come down if a headache gets worse.
- Monsoon. June to August landslides can close the road for a day or more. Keep a spare day.
- Cash. Tawang, Bomdila and Dirang have ATMs. Withdraw in Tezpur in case they are empty. Sumo seats and small eateries take cash or UPI.
- Signal. Jio, Airtel and BSNL work in Tawang town, patchily on the pass roads.
Late October or early November is the page's pick: clear skies, open roads, and none of the summer crowds.
