Ziro Valley
A flat rice-growing valley where fish are farmed in the paddy fields, ringed by pine hills, and home to the Apatani, who terraced it without a plough.
Ziro is a working agricultural valley rather than a viewpoint, which is its whole appeal. The Apatani grow rice and fish in the same flooded fields and manage the water without machinery — a system UNESCO has been considering for years. The old villages have bamboo houses on stilts and sacred groves. An Inner Line Permit is required, takes a day online, and is the only real barrier.
Instead of another Himalayan hill station. Best for solo travellers, couples and groups. Best months: Mar–May, Sep–Nov.
When to go
March to April and September to October. The Ziro Music Festival is in late September. June to August is heavy monsoon with road closures; December to February is cold and clear but very quiet.

Eating
Needs warning in advance. Apatani cooking is fish and smoked meat centred, though the vegetable and bamboo-shoot dishes are excellent and entirely veg. Tell your homestay when you book and they will cook around it without fuss.

What goes wrong here, and how to do it cheaper
What goes wrong:
An Inner Line Permit is required for Arunachal, including for Indian citizens. Apply online a week ahead — it is straightforward but it is not optional.
Sacred groves and certain village structures are off limits. Ask before entering or photographing anything.
Roads in and out close in heavy monsoon. Leave a spare day before any onward flight.
How to do it cheaper:
The permit is the only real barrier and it costs a few hundred rupees online. Almost nobody bothers, which is why Ziro is still like this.
Stay in a village homestay, not Hapoli. Same price, and the valley makes sense from inside a village.
Go in late September for the festival or mid-October for the harvest — the fields are at their best either side of it.
