Majuli
A river island the size of a city, reached only by ferry, with monastery communities that have been performing dance-drama since the sixteenth century.

Majuli sits in the Brahmaputra and is losing land to it every year. The island's satras are monastic communities founded by the Vaishnava reformer Srimanta Sankardeva, and they still perform the masked dance-drama he devised. There are no bridges. The ferry from Nimati Ghat takes an hour, carries motorbikes and cows, and is the only way in or out.
Instead of a standard Assam tea-and-rhino trip. Works for everyone. Best months: Jan–Mar, Sep–Dec.
When to go
October to March. The Raas Mahotsav in November is the island at its most extraordinary. June to September is flood season — ferries are disrupted and parts of the island go under.

Eating
Manageable but say so early — Assamese and Mishing cooking is fish-centred. Aloo pitika, khar, dal, boiled greens and rice are all vegetarian, and satras serve entirely vegetarian food.

What goes wrong:
The last ferry off the island is mid-afternoon. Missing it means an unplanned night, which is not the worst outcome but plan for it.
Flood season from June to September disrupts ferries and submerges parts of the island.
Satras are religious communities. Photography inside prayer halls is often not allowed — ask.
How to do it cheaper:
The ferry is ₹40 and takes an hour. It is one of the best cheap boat rides in India.
A satra guest room at ₹600 puts you inside a working monastery for less than a hotel.
Cycle. The island is flat, the distances are right, and nobody who takes an auto sees it properly.
