Mechuka (Menchukha) is a broad, flat valley in Arunachal's far north-west, home to Memba Buddhists and to Ramo, Bokar and Libo villages. It looks like Tawang did before the tunnel and the tour buses: an old hilltop monastery, Samten Yongcha, a river you can walk beside for hours, wooden houses, and very few visitors. The price is the journey. From Dibrugarh it is a day to Aalo via Pasighat, then another day, about 180 km, on the 5:30 am shared Sumo. Indian citizens need an Inner Line Permit; foreigners need a Protected Area Permit through a registered operator. Allow six or seven days from Dibrugarh, with three nights in the valley.

Why Mechuka, instead of Tawang: A wide grassy valley at 6,000 ft on the Siyom river, a hilltop Buddhist gompa above it and the Tibet border 29 km away, at the end of a two-day road.

When to go

October and November are the best months: clear, dry, about 15-18°C by day and 4-8°C at night. December to February is cold, well below freezing at night, with snow some years. March and April are good but rain starts. May to September is monsoon: the Aalo road suffers landslides and a 7-hour drive can take more than 10.

Step 9 of 11Next: Tips

Know before you go

CashBring ₹10,000-15,000 in cash from Dibrugarh or Aalo. Sumos, homestays and cafés are mostly cash.
Cards & UPIAlmost nowhere. UPI only works when the network does.
Phone signalBSNL is the most reliable; Jio and Airtel are patchy, with 4G on and off. Expect hours without signal.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Indian citizens need a Tourist eILP (eilp.arunachal.gov.in only), valid up to 14 days, with a local reference such as your homestay. The portal's own help says ₹100 per person; recent travellers report paying more for tourist permits, so check the amount at payment. Under-14s travel on a parent's permit.
  • Foreigners need a Protected Area Permit, applied through an approved Arunachal tour operator, with a USD 30 (about ₹2,850) per head royalty. Aalo-Mechuka is one of the state's official tourist circuits, but routes and group rules are set on the permit; do not stray off them.
  • The valley is about 29 km from the border with Tibet and has an Army presence and an advanced landing ground. No photos of military sites, no drones, and keep two spare days for landslides on the Aalo road.

Ways to spend less

  • Go in late October or November: dry roads, clear skies and the valley turning gold.
  • Book your Aalo-Mechuka Sumo seat the evening before. Miss the 5:30 am departure and you lose a day.
  • Stay three nights, not one. The two-day journey is only worth it if you have time to walk the valley.
