Gyumri gives you the old Armenian townhouses, churches and cafe culture that Yerevan has mostly rebuilt over. The Kumayri district has more than a thousand 18th- and 19th-century buildings, and you can walk it for free in an afternoon. Fly into Yerevan and take a 1,200 AMD train or a 1,500 AMD marshrutka north; a 300 AMD airport bus gets you into the city first. Two days covers the town and museums; add a third for Marmashen and Harichavank monasteries.

Mistakes to avoid
- UK travel advice says not to travel to parts of Armenia near the closed eastern border with Azerbaijan. Gyumri is in the north-west, but check the current map before side trips.
- Armenia is an earthquake zone; the 1988 quake killed 25,000-50,000 people in this part of the country. Know the exits where you stay.
- Winters are severe and roads are in poor condition from November to February. Avoid driving outside towns after dark.
Ways to spend less
- The regular train from Yerevan costs about 1,200 AMD (about ₹295), and the marshrutka 1,500 AMD.
- One 2,000 AMD ticket covers both the architecture museum and the Merkurov House-Museum.
- Walking Kumayri and Vardanants Square costs nothing and is the main reason to come.
