Green alpine valleys above the Black Sea, wooden villages on stilts, and high pastures nobody photographs for a postcard.
Türkiye's mountains get a fraction of the visitors its balloons and beaches do, and the Kaçkars are the best of them: a wet, green range where the Black Sea rain meets 3,900 m peaks. Base yourself in Ayder or Çamlıhemşin, walk up to the yayla — the summer highland pastures — and sleep in village pensions. It looks like Switzerland and costs like rural Anatolia.

When to go
June to September. The high passes hold snow until mid-June and the yayla villages empty out by late September. It rains here in every month — this is the wettest part of Türkiye.

Eating
Comfortable. Muhlama, menemen, mercimek çorbası, pide with cheese, and the standard Turkish breakfast are all vegetarian, and meze culture means a whole table without meat is completely normal. Vegans will find dairy is central here — plan around it.

What goes wrong:
It rains here in every month. Waterproofs are not optional equipment, they are the trip.
Cloud closes in on the high yayla routes very fast. Take a guide above the tree line unless you navigate well.
Ayder itself has been heavily overbuilt. Stay in a yayla village above it, not in the resort strip.
How to do it cheaper:
Sleep in a yayla house above Ayder rather than in Ayder. Better view, better food, half the noise.
Turkish intercity buses are comfortable, punctual and cost a fraction of flying. Use them.
Combine with Batumi across the Georgian border — four hours by bus, and two very different countries in one trip.
