Ninh Binh has the same tower-karst scenery that people go to Ha Long Bay for, but here you see it from a small rowing boat on rivers that run through caves and past temples. The Trang An boat trip, a UNESCO World Heritage site, costs 300,000 dong (about ₹1,100) all in, against an overnight bay cruise. Trains from Hanoi take about 2 h 15 m and start at 69,000 dong. Stay in Tam Coc, where dorm beds start around €4.50 and many homestays lend bicycles for free. Two or three days covers Trang An, Tam Coc, Hang Mua and Hoa Lu.
