Nong Khiaw
Karst towers over a green river, a viewpoint that ruins every other viewpoint, and a slow boat to get there.
Nong Khiaw is three hours upriver from Luang Prabang and has roughly one street, which is the entire appeal. Limestone cliffs come straight down to the Nam Ou; bungalows on the far bank cost under ₹1,000 with a hammock and that view. The Pha Daeng viewpoint climb is an hour of genuine effort for one of the great sights of Southeast Asia. Go one further to Muang Ngoi, which has no road at all.
Instead of Luang Prabang. Best for solo travellers, couples and groups. Best months: Jan–Mar, Sep–Dec.
When to go
October to March is the dry season and the only sensible window. April brings agricultural burning that fills the valley with smoke for weeks; May to September is heavy rain.

Eating
Straightforward if you speak up. Lao food uses fish sauce and padaek widely, so 'bo sai pa daek' and 'kin jay' are useful. Sticky rice, tam mak hoong (green papaya salad, ordered without fish sauce), fried vegetables and noodle soups with vegetable broth are all easily arranged.

What goes wrong:
Unexploded ordnance remains a real hazard in rural Laos. Stay on marked paths, always.
Agricultural burning through March and April can make the air genuinely unhealthy and erases the view.
The Nam Ou has been dammed in several places — boat services change year to year. Check locally, not online.
How to do it cheaper:
Stay on the far bank. Same town, better view, cheaper rooms, and you cross a footbridge to eat.
Climb Pha Daeng at 5 am — you get the mist, the sunrise and the trail to yourself.
Muang Ngoi is an hour upriver and has no road. That is the whole point of it.
