Taiping was Perak's capital in the tin-rush years and still has the bones of it: shophouse streets, the country's oldest museum, and lake gardens laid out over old mine pools. It is the wettest town in Peninsular Malaysia, which is why everything is so green. Bukit Larut, the old hill station, rises straight behind the gardens, and the mangrove fishing town of Kuala Sepetang is half an hour away. It is a quiet, cheap two- or three-night stop on the train line between Kuala Lumpur and Penang.
