Chiang Rai has the northern Thai temples, night markets and khao soi that draw people to Chiang Mai, in a smaller and quieter town. Its big sights are modern works by local artists: the White Temple, Baan Dam (the Black House) and the Blue Temple. A local bus to the White Temple costs about 20 baht, and central hostel dorms start around €5. Take the Green Bus from Chiang Mai or fly from Bangkok Don Mueang. Two or three days is enough, longer if you head on to Chiang Saen or Chiang Khong.

Mistakes to avoid
- Smoke from crop and forest burning is heavy from about February to April. Chiang Rai's Mae Sai district has recorded some of Thailand's worst readings. People with asthma or heart problems should avoid this season.
- UK travel advice (still current at 4 Nov 2026) has no warning for Chiang Rai, but says the security situation across the border in Myanmar is unpredictable. Vapes are illegal in Thailand, with no exceptions for tourists.
- Rental scooters in tourist areas are often unregistered and cannot legally be ridden on public roads. Helmets are compulsory, and riding without a valid licence can void your travel insurance.
Ways to spend less
- The local bus to the White Temple costs about 20 baht, against a taxi or tour.
- Green Bus from Chiang Mai is 196 baht on the standard coach.
- The weekend walking streets, Wat Phra Sing and the clock tower light show are free.
