Zanskar is the high, cut-off side of Ladakh: one wide valley around the small town of Padum, ringed by passes that close for half the year. You reach it by a long shared jeep from Kargil over Penzi La, or from the Manali side over Shinku La. Karsha and Stongde monasteries are a short drive from Padum, and Phugtal, built into a cave, is a day away by road and on foot. Give it a week from Leh: two days to get in, three in the valley, two to get out.

Why Zanskar, instead of Pangong: A walled-off Buddhist valley at 3,657 m, a twelve-hour shared jeep from Kargil, with cliff monasteries and no ATM, no petrol pump and almost no signal.

When to go

The Kargil road over Penzi La is usually open mid-June to October; mid-June to September is the reliable window. Shinku La from the Manali side is best July to September, and in May 2026 was open only to 4x4s with chains. In winter Zanskar is cut off by road.

Step 9 of 11Next: Tips

Know before you go

CashBring all your cash from Kargil or Leh. Homestays, jeeps and dhabas are cash.
Cards & UPIDo not count on cards or UPI anywhere in the valley.
Phone signalBSNL postpaid works in Padum. Most of the road has no signal at all.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Kargil town lies close to the Line of Control. The UK government (FCDO) advises against all travel within 10 km of the India-Pakistan border and against all travel to Jammu and Kashmir, which includes the Srinagar road to Kargil. Foreign visitors should come from Leh, not Srinagar, and check their insurance.
  • Indian citizens need no permit for Zanskar. Foreign nationals: rules reported by guides conflict; check with a registered Leh or Kargil travel agent before you go.
  • Padum is at 3,657 m and the road crosses Penzi La. Acclimatise in Leh or Kargil first, and expect a full, rough day in the jeep.

Ways to spend less

  • Share a taxi-union day car with others from your guesthouse: ₹6,000 a vehicle is ₹1,500 each with four people.
  • Sleep in village homestays at ₹500 to ₹800 a head with meals instead of Padum hotels.
  • Go in late August or September: the road is open, the barley is harvested and the summer crowd from Manali has thinned.
