Araku Valley & Lambasingi
One of India's great train journeys — 58 tunnels and 84 bridges up from the coast — to a tribal coffee valley that freezes in December.
The Kirandul passenger from Visakhapatnam climbs the Eastern Ghats through fifty-eight tunnels and over eighty-four bridges to Araku, and costs a few hundred rupees in second class. The valley grows coffee under tribal cooperatives. Lambasingi, four hours away, is the only place in South India that regularly records near-zero temperatures — locals call it the Kashmir of Andhra, which is a stretch, but the frost is real.
Instead of Ooty. Works for everyone. Best months: Jan–Mar, Jul–Dec.
When to go
September to February, and November to January for the cold at Lambasingi. April to June is hot even at altitude; the monsoon brings landslides on the ghat roads though the train usually runs.

The Kirandul train is a passenger service with unreserved coaches. Board early at Vizag for a window.
Lambasingi's frost season is a weekend event for Andhra and Telangana — book anything at all ahead in December.
Photographing tribal communities without asking is common here and is not acceptable.

₹300 for one of the great mountain railway journeys in the world, and hardly any foreign visitor has heard of it.
The train stops at Borra Caves — do the caves and Araku in one ticket.
