Hogenakkal
The Kaveri crashes over black rocks into a gorge, you float under it in a round coracle, and they fry the fish you just watched being caught.

Hogenakkal is where the Kaveri enters Tamil Nadu through a gorge of ancient carbonatite rock. The coracle ride is the whole reason to come: round boats spin through the gorge, stop under the falls and land at a rock beach where fish is fried on the spot. It works as a day trip from Bengaluru or Salem, but staying overnight lets you get on the water before the crowds arrive.
A day trip that beats a mall weekend. Best for couples, groups and families. Best months: Jan–May, Sep–Dec.
When to go
October to March is the ideal time: good flow, calm enough for coracles, and pleasant weather. In heavy monsoon inflows (typically July to September), coracle rides and bathing are banned, sometimes for weeks. Check the day before.

Coracle rides and bathing are banned when the Kaveri runs high. Check the district news before you travel in the monsoon.
Only bathe in the marked areas. The currents in the gorge are strong, and people drown here every year.

Arrive by 8 am, on the first coracles, before the crowd from Bengaluru arrives.
