Koh Mook is a small, lived-in fishing island off the Trang coast with the same limestone cliffs as Phi Phi and none of the party. Most visitors come for Tham Morakot, the Emerald Cave, where you float through a dark tunnel into a beach enclosed by rock. The rest of the time is kayaking, motorbike-taxi rides to Charlie Beach for sunset, and day hops to Koh Kradan and Koh Ngai. Getting here from Trang town takes a minivan and a short boat. Give it three or four nights.

Mistakes to avoid
- The Emerald Cave is closed from 1 June to 30 September, and trips run only at the right tide. Check before you plan the trip around it.
- From May to October the direct island speedboats mostly stop. Use the Trang minivan-and-boat route.
- The cave swim is in total darkness for part of the way. If you are claustrophobic or a weak swimmer, tell the boatman; guides tow people through on a rope.
Ways to spend less
- Kayak or take the first boat to the Emerald Cave before the Lanta and Trang tour boats arrive mid-morning.
- The local ferry from Khuan Tung Ku is about 100 baht against about 600 for a private longtail.
- Base on Koh Mook and day-trip Kradan and Ngai: their rooms cost far more for the same water.
