Turkey itinerary: 7 days (Istanbul, Cappadocia, Pamukkale)

For first-timers who want the three big sights in one week without a rental car. Two and a half days in Istanbul, a short flight to Kayseri, two Cappadocia mornings so the balloon has a backup, then an overnight bus to Pamukkale and a one-hour flight back to Istanbul. The pace is brisk but there is only one long travel leg, and it happens while you sleep. Expect about $600 per person on a shoestring without the balloon, $1,190 mid-range with it, and $1,780 in comfort.

IstanbulCappadocia (Göreme)Pamukkale
Budget, per person$600hostels, street food
Mid-range, per person$1,190double rooms, sit-down meals
Comfort, per person$1,780upper mid-range

On the ground for the whole trip, excluding international flights. Per person, 7 days / 5 hotel nights (Istanbul 2, Cappadocia 2, Pamukkale 1) plus one night on the bus, excluding international flights, visas, insurance and SIM.

When to go

JanFebMarAprMayJunJulAugSepOctNovDec

April-May and September-October are the sweet spot: Istanbul is walkable, and balloons fly most mornings. Royal Balloon says Cappadocia has roughly 260 flyable days a year, so every season loses some mornings to wind; winter loses more. Winter is also cheap: Voyager Balloons drops its standard flight from €260 to €160 from 1 November to 1 April. July-August is high season and Pamukkale's white travertine has no shade. Rating is our judgement, not an official statistic.

Before you go: UK FCDO (updated 27 Oct 2026) advises against all travel within 10 km of the border with Syria. US State Dept rates Türkiye Level 2 (Exercise Increased Caution) and says do not travel to the Syria and Iraq border region (June 2026 advisory). This route (Istanbul, Cappadocia, Pamukkale, and the Ephesus swap) is in the west and centre of the country, hundreds of kilometres from those areas. Do not add side trips to Mardin, Şanlıurfa, Gaziantep or the far south-east without reading both advisories first. Hot-air balloon flights are cancelled by the civil aviation authority when the wind is outside limits; that is a safety decision, not a scam, so do not try to fly with an operator that goes when others do not.

Visa and entry

US and UK ordinary passports: visa-free for 90 days in any 180; the UK FCDO says your passport must be valid for at least 150 days from the day you arrive. Most EU passports: visa-free for 90 days in 180 (Greek Cypriot passport holders need an e-Visa; issuing visas at the border gate ended on 2 January 2026). UAE citizens: visa-free for 90 days in 180. Indian ordinary passports need a visa: if you hold a valid Schengen, US, UK or Ireland visa or residence permit you can get a single-entry, one-month e-Visa at evisa.gov.tr (fee: check on evisa.gov.tr; secondary sites quote about $43-51). A UAE residence permit alone does NOT qualify an Indian passport holder for the e-Visa: apply for a sticker visa through a Turkish mission (for UAE residents, the Turkish consulate in Dubai or the embassy in Abu Dhabi and their visa centre; check the current process). UAE residents of other nationalities: the rule depends on your passport, not your residence; look up your country on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs list.

Is a transport pass worth it?

No rail or bus pass is worth it on this route: the long legs are one flight, one bus and one flight, each booked separately. In Istanbul buy an Istanbulkart at the airport machines or any metro station; a full fare is 46.20 TL ($0.93) since 20 July 2026, transfers within the time window are cheaper, and it also pays the Basilica Cistern entry, where cash is not taken. Museum passes: the state Museum Pass Türkiye was reported at €165 in 2025; the ministry's tariff sets it at €185 from 1 April 2027 (Museum Pass Istanbul €120, Kapadokya €75, Ege €105 from that date). Current 2026 prices: check at a ticket office. On this route the pass would cover roughly Göreme €20 + Derinkuyu/Kaymaklı €13 + Hierapolis €30 + the Topkapı main palace, which is well under €165. It does not cover Hagia Sophia, the Basilica Cistern or (reportedly) the Topkapı Harem. Skip it. Museum Pass Istanbul (about €105 in 2026 per a September 2026 guide) only pays off if you add several Istanbul state museums beyond Topkapı and the Archaeology Museums.

The day-by-day plan

Day 1: Land at IST, Hagia Sophia and the Basilica Cistern

Base: Istanbul (Sultanahmet)

Morning

Clear passport control at Istanbul Airport (IST) and take the Havaist airport bus into the old city.

How: Follow signs to Havaist at arrivals. Line HVL-13 runs to Sultanahmet / Çatladıkapı via Eminönü; HVL-9 runs to Taksim if you stay in Beyoğlu. Pay by bank card, Istanbulkart or online ticket. No cash on board. Buy an Istanbulkart from the machines in the arrivals hall before you leave the airport.

Time: About 1.5-2 hours to Sultanahmet depending on traffic (check) · Cost: 470 TL ($9.50) Sultanahmet, Taksim and Aksaray lines; 515 TL to Kadıköy (hava.ist figures as reported 13 Oct 2026)

Tip: The Sultanahmet line runs about 05:00-23:45 only. Land later and take the Taksim line (night departures 00:30, 01:15, 02:15) and a taxi, or pre-book a transfer (Helios lists IST-town centre at €48 per car). The M11 metro is the traffic-free option but stops at Gayrettepe, far from Sultanahmet, and its last train is about 00:21.

Afternoon

Hagia Sophia: the upper gallery with the Byzantine mosaics.

How: Walk. Visitors use a separate tourist entrance; sources disagree on which side, so follow the signs or ask at the square. The ground floor is an active mosque; the paid ticket is for the gallery.

Time: 1-1.5 hours · Cost: €25 ($28) for foreign visitors, paid in lira at the day's rate; under-8s free (widely reported; no official notice found)

Tip: Tourist access pauses at prayer times and on Friday around midday. Shoulders and knees covered; women bring a scarf.

Afternoon

Basilica Cistern, the Byzantine underground reservoir, a few minutes' walk away.

How: Walk across Sultanahmet Square to the Yerebatan entrance.

Time: 45 min-1 hour · Cost: 1,950 TL ($39) daytime; the evening 'Night Shift' ticket is about 3,000 TL ($60)

Tip: Card or Istanbulkart only at the gate, no cash. The Museum Pass is not valid here.

Evening

Sunset around the Blue Mosque and Sultanahmet Square, dinner nearby or down the hill in Kumkapı.

How: Walk. The Blue Mosque is a working mosque; time your visit around prayer times.

Time: 2 hours · Cost: Food: see 'eat'

Where to sleep: Sultanahmet for first-timers: Hagia Sophia, the Cistern and Topkapı are all a short walk, and the Havaist HVL-13 drops you here. Karaköy or Beyoğlu if you want evenings out (Taksim line HVL-9).
Budget: Hostel dorm from about $16 a bed (Booking.com, Nov 2026) · Mid: Typical double about $91 a night (Booking.com median for Sultanahmet, Nov 2026) · Comfort: 4-5 star double about $94-107 a night (Booking.com median to 75th percentile, Nov 2026)
Eat: Simit (sesame bread ring) from a street cart for breakfast and a fish or köfte dinner around Sultanahmet; we could not confirm 2026 menu prices, so check before you sit down and ask for the menu with prices.
If it rains: Everything on Day 1 is indoors except the walk. Add the Istanbul Archaeology Museums (€15) next to Topkapı.

Day 2: Topkapı Palace, a Bosphorus ferry and Galata

Base: Istanbul (Sultanahmet)

Morning

Topkapı Palace, the Ottoman sultans' palace, plus the Harem.

How: Walk from Sultanahmet, behind Hagia Sophia. Buy tickets on the official Milli Saraylar (National Palaces) site or app to skip the cash-desk queue.

Time: 3 hours · Cost: About 2,750 TL / €55 ($61) for the combined palace + Harem + Hagia Irene ticket, per several 2026 guides; not confirmed on the official site, so check

Tip: Sources conflict on the weekly closing day (most say Tuesday, one says Monday) and the closing time. Check millisaraylar.gov.tr before you plan the day; if it is closed, swap Day 2 and Day 3 morning.

Afternoon

Cross continents on a city ferry: Eminönü to Üsküdar or Kadıköy and back.

How: T1 tram or walk downhill to Eminönü pier, tap your Istanbulkart at the Şehir Hatları turnstile.

Time: About 2 hours with a wander on the Asian side · Cost: Üsküdar-Eminönü was 53.20 TL ($1.07) from 16 Feb 2026; city fares rose about 10% on 20 July 2026, so expect a little more (check)

Tip: The public ferry is the cheap Bosphorus experience. Şehir Hatları also runs a Bosphorus tour boat; a 2025 price list showed 170 TL short / 320 TL long, now outdated, so check at Eminönü.

Evening

Galata Tower at sunset, then dinner in Karaköy.

How: From Eminönü walk across the Galata Bridge and uphill.

Time: 1 hour at the tower · Cost: €30 ($33) per a guide citing the ministry fee list (1 Oct 2026); check

Tip: The view from the bridge and the streets around the tower is free; the ticket is optional.

Where to sleep: Same hotel in Sultanahmet.
Eat: Fish sandwich at the Eminönü waterfront or dinner in Kadıköy's market streets on the Asian side. No confirmed 2026 prices; check.
If it rains: Swap the ferry for the Istanbul Archaeology Museums (€15) next to Topkapı.
