Arslanbob & Song-Kul
The world's largest walnut forest, yurt camps at 3,000 metres, and a community tourism network that books it all for you at village prices.
Kyrgyzstan is the easiest mountain country in the world to travel independently, because a network of village-run community tourism offices exists specifically to arrange homestays, horses and guides at fixed, published rates. Arslanbob is a Uzbek village inside a 11,000-hectare walnut forest. Song-Kul is an alpine lake at 3,016 m where families still bring their herds up for the summer and sleep in yurts. Neither requires a tour.
Instead of Issyk-Kul. Best for solo travellers, couples and groups. Best months: May–Sep.
When to go
June to September only. Song-Kul's yurt camps go up in late June and come down in early September; the passes are snowed shut either side. July and August are the reliable months.

Eating
Harder work than most of Asia — Central Asian cooking is mutton-centred and 'vegetarian' is not a familiar concept in the villages. Pumpkin samsa, lagman ordered without meat, bread, kaymak, salads and fruit will see you through. Say so when you book a homestay and they will cook around it.

What goes wrong here, and how to do it cheaper
What goes wrong:
Song-Kul at 3,016 m is cold at night in any month, including August. Sub-zero is normal.
Border-zone permits are needed for Kol-Suu and some Pamir-adjacent areas. Arrange in Bishkek or Naryn.
Yurt camps have no signal and no road access in bad weather. Tell someone your plan.
How to do it cheaper:
The CBT community tourism offices publish fixed prices for homestays, horses and guides. No haggling, no agency markup, money stays in the village.
Bishkek to Osh by shared taxi is twelve hours over three mountain passes for under ₹2,000 — one of Asia's great road journeys.
Go in September for the walnut harvest: the whole of Arslanbob moves into the forest and homestays cost less.
