Queenstown logs millions of guest nights a year and prices to match. Dunedin, three and a half hours east, is a working university city with grand Edwardian stone buildings, free museums and wild coast on its doorstep. The Otago Peninsula runs 30 km out from the centre: royal albatross at Taiaroa Head, Larnach Castle, sea lions and penguins on the beaches, and a city bus as far as Portobello. Give it three days: one for the city, two for the peninsula and the coast.
When to go
December to March is the warm, long-day season and the best time for the peninsula. Coastal Otago is cooler and cloudier than much of New Zealand; winter (June–August) is cold but quiet. February is when about 20,000 students return, and cheap beds get scarce.

Know before you go
Mistakes to avoid
- Keep at least 10 m from sea lions on the beaches and never come between them and the sea. They move fast.
- The peninsula's Highcliff and harbour roads are narrow and winding. Drive slowly and do not stop on blind bends to look at wildlife.
- Orbus fares change to zones on 1 November 2026, and the Tunnel Beach track may close again for repair work. Check both before you go.
Ways to spend less
- Toitū museum and the railway station are free, and the Saturday farmers market is the cheapest good food in town.
- Take route 18 instead of a peninsula tour: NZD 2.50 with a Bee Card for one of New Zealand's most scenic bus rides.
- Larnach's gardens-only ticket is half the castle price and has the same views across the peninsula.
