Kuching gives you Borneo's wildlife and rainforest without the cost and crowds of the Kota Kinabalu circuit. Semi-wild orangutans come to the feeding platforms at Semenggoh, and Bako National Park has beaches, sandstone cliffs and jungle trails a boat ride from the city. Entry is set by the state: RM10 at Semenggoh and RM20 at national parks for foreign adults. The old town and waterfront are compact and walkable, beds in central hostels start around €6, and the city's BAS.MY buses take cash. Give it three or four days.

Know before you go
Mistakes to avoid
- Sarawak runs its own immigration. Even flying in from Peninsular Malaysia you pass immigration control and need entry and exit stamps, so keep your passport with you (UK travel advice).
- UK travel advice (still current at 4 Nov 2026) has no warnings for Sarawak, but reports bag-snatching in Malaysian cities and widespread card and ATM fraud.
- December to February is very wet. Rough water can stop the Bako boats, and flooding and landslides are common in storm seasons.
Ways to spend less
- State-set park fees are low: RM10 at Semenggoh, RM20 at national parks.
- BAS.MY buses to Semenggoh and the airport cost from RM0.90 and take cash or a card tap.
- Old Kuching, the waterfront and the riverside temples are free to walk.
