Flores (Labuan Bajo & Komodo)

Everyone flies into Bali and stops there. Three islands east, Flores is where the same trip gets wilder and far less crowded — live Komodo dragons on Rinca and Komodo islands, a pink-sand beach you can actually walk on, and boat trips priced for backpackers, not resort guests. Labuan Bajo is a small harbour town, not a nightclub strip, so island-hopping here means chartering a real wooden boat rather than picking a beach club. Indians get visa-on-arrival, and cheap connecting flights run through Jakarta or Bali.

Eating
Indonesian food is meat- and seafood-heavy by default. Ask for tahu (tofu) and tempe (fermented soy) dishes, or say 'tanpa daging/ikan' (without meat/fish) — most warungs near the harbour can put together a decent vegetarian nasi campur if asked.

Komodo National Park's entry, conservation and harbour fees change often and the system has shifted to an online permit (SiOra) replacing paper tickets — check the current fees and booking process before you go, don't rely on old numbers.
Boats to the park don't run in bad weather without notice — build a buffer day into your itinerary if you have a flight to catch.
Only use licensed operators/guides for dragon treks — Komodo dragons are wild and dangerous, and rangers are there for a reason, not a photo prop.
