Know before you go
Mistakes to avoid
- UK travel advice (updated 18 September 2026) says reported rape and sexual assault cases are high in Bali and Lombok, and drink spiking has been reported on Lombok and the Gili Islands. Watch your drink and avoid poorly lit areas at night.
- Methanol poisoning from counterfeit spirits has killed tourists in Indonesia. Indonesia has a zero-tolerance drug policy with very long sentences; cannabis and CBD products are illegal.
- Rinjani is an active volcano and trekkers died after falls in 2025. Use a licensed guide, follow official closures and exclusion zones, and ride scooters only in daylight.

- A Rp60,000-80,000 scooter gets you to every south-coast beach and Bukit Merese.

Will my phone and cards work in Lombok?
Phone signal: Local prepaid SIMs need registering with your passport. Check coverage before heading to the far south or Rinjani. Cards and UPI: Taken at most hotels, dive shops and Kuta cafés. Not at warungs or entrance booths. Cash: Indonesian rupiah (Rp). Carry cash for warungs, scooters, parking and village donations. The airport departure charge is payable in rupiah only.
