Siquijor is a small island you can ride around in a day on one coast road of about 72 km. San Juan on the west coast has most of the guesthouses and the sunset; Lazi in the south has Cambugahay Falls and one of the oldest stone churches and convents in the region. The island is known across the Philippines for its folk healers and potion-makers, which locals talk about openly and visitors should treat with respect. Take the fast ferry from Dumaguete, rent a scooter, and stay three or four nights.

Why Siquijor, instead of Panglao, Bohol: A one-loop island of turquoise waterfall pools, quiet sunset beaches and a 19th-century stone church, an hour by fast ferry from Dumaguete.

When to go

February to May is driest and busiest. June to October brings bursts of rain, cheaper rooms and fewer people, but ferries are sometimes cancelled when weather warnings go up. November to January is a good middle ground. Sea conditions, not rain, are what spoil a trip here.

CashBring pesos. Entry fees, tricycles, scooter rental and carinderias are cash only. A ₱50 Tourism Ecological Fee is collected when you leave, at the port or airport.
Cards & UPISome resorts and a few cafés take cards. Most places don't.
Phone signalBuy a Globe or Smart SIM in Dumaguete or Cebu. Coverage is fine along the coast road.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Ferries are cancelled when weather warnings go up, especially June to October. Don't book a tight onward flight from Dumaguete.
  • Riding a scooter without a licence is illegal and roads have loose gravel and dogs. If you've never ridden, hire a tricycle.
  • Folk healing is part of living local culture here. Ask before photographing healers or rituals, and don't treat it as a show.

Ways to spend less

  • Take the Montenegro RoRo from Dumaguete if you are not in a hurry. It costs about half the fast ferry.
  • Rent the scooter for several days. Rates drop to around ₱350 a day for four days or more.
  • Visit Cambugahay at opening time. By late morning the tour vans arrive and the pools fill up.
