Barichara is a protected colonial town of whitewashed houses, terracotta roofs and stone streets, perched above the Suárez river canyon in Santander. It has the colonial charm people go to Cartagena for, at mountain temperatures and a fraction of the price, with no cruise crowds. You reach it by bus via San Gil, walk the 9 km Camino Real stone road down to tiny Guane, and use San Gil for rafting and canyon trips. Two nights is the minimum; three if you add the Chicamocha canyon.

Mistakes to avoid
- UK FCDO (updated 15 Oct 2026) has no 'advise against' area in Santander, but it does advise against all but essential travel to all of neighbouring Norte de Santander, including Cúcuta. Do not continue north-east by road towards the Venezuelan border.
- The single ATM runs dry on Colombian holiday weekends. Arrive with cash.
- The Camino Real has little shade and the stones are slippery when wet. Go early, carry water, and skip it after heavy rain in April and May.
Ways to spend less
- Colonial streets as fine as Cartagena's, for a set lunch of about ₹600 instead of coastal prices.
- The best walk in the area is free: the Camino Real to Guane, with a ₹110 bus back up.
- Stay midweek: posadas fill and prices rise on puente weekends, and the town is silent Monday to Thursday.
