Cuenca is Ecuador's third city and its best-kept colonial centre, a UNESCO World Heritage site that most visitors skip because they fly into Quito and straight out to Galápagos. The old town is flat enough to walk, the national museum and its Inca ruins are free, and set lunches cost two or three dollars. El Cajas National Park sits about 32 km west, so you get high lakes and páramo as a day trip. Fly in from Quito; give it three days, two for the city and one for Cajas.

Why Cuenca, instead of Quito: Blue-tiled cathedral domes, four rivers and a UNESCO old town at 2,500 m, with páramo lakes forty minutes up the road.

When to go

Highland weather all year: mild days, cold nights, rain possible in any month. Long-run averages point to August and September as the drier, sunnier stretch and February to May as the wettest. Avoid national holiday weekends, above all the early-November holiday, when the city fills and hotels sell out.

Step 9 of 11Next: Tips

Know before you go

CashEcuador uses the US dollar. Carry small notes; USD 20 bills can be hard to break at markets and on buses.
Cards & UPIHotels and sit-down restaurants take cards. Markets, buses and small shops are cash.
Phone signalBuy a local SIM in the city with your passport. Coverage is good in town and patchy in Cajas.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Do not route overland through Guayaquil. The UK advises against all but essential travel to Guayas (and the rest of the coast) except airside transit at Guayaquil airport, and a state of emergency covers several provinces. Fly Quito–Cuenca or take the highland bus.
  • Ecuador is under a UK note on the 2026–27 El Niño event. Heavy rain can close mountain roads, including the Cajas road; check before you set out.
  • El Cajas is around 3,900 m and the weather turns fast. Register at the control point, stay on marked trails, and be back on the road before the last buses in late afternoon.

Ways to spend less

  • The Mercado 9 de Octubre almuerzo, under USD 3 for soup, main and juice, is the best-value meal in Ecuador's highlands.
  • Pumapungo is free and is both a national museum and an Inca site. Most visitors walk past it.
  • The Quito–Cuenca bus costs about a tenth of the flight. Take the night bus and save a hotel night.
