Paraty gives you the green mountains, warm sea and Portuguese colonial streets people go to Rio for, in a town small enough to walk across in fifteen minutes. The historic centre, its fort and the Casa da Cultura cost nothing to visit, and a local bus reaches the beaches and natural pool at Trindade. Fly into Rio's Galeão airport, take the express bus to the Novo Rio bus station, then the Costa Verde coach for about five hours. Three days covers the town, a schooner day in the bay and a day at Trindade; come between May and September to dodge the heaviest rain.
