Chapada Diamantina is a high plateau in the middle of Bahia: table mountains, canyons, rivers, waterfalls and flooded caves. Lençóis, an old diamond town six hours by bus from Salvador, is the base; Vale do Capão, on the far side of the park, is the village at the start of the Fumaça falls walk. Some walks start from town and need nothing; the big ones need a local guide (condutor) and the caves and pools charge entry. Give it five nights, more if you do the multi-day treks.

Mistakes to avoid
- No UK FCDO 'advise against' area covers Bahia (Brazil page updated 29 Sep 2026; the only listed areas are rivers in Amazonas state).
- The national park does not run rescues and its trails are rough and unmarked; the park authority ICMBio recommends a qualified condutor. Hire one for anything beyond the town walks, and always sign the trail book.
- In the rainy months (November to March) rivers rise fast and rocks get slippery. Do not cross a rising river and do not swim below waterfalls after rain.
Ways to spend less
- The Fumaça walk and the Serrano pools cost nothing.
- Share a condutor: R$350 a day split four ways is about ₹1,500 each.
- Take the 23:00 bus from Salvador: you save a night's room and wake up in Lençóis.
