Chiloé is a green, rainy island off Chile's Lake District, a short ferry hop from Puerto Montt. Its fishing towns have palafitos (houses on stilts), shingle-clad wooden churches listed by UNESCO, and a food culture all its own. Base yourself in Castro, take a minibus to Cucao for the national park's dunes and Pacific beach, and go to Puñihuil near Ancud to see penguins by boat. Torres del Paine costs a flight to the far south and a much higher park fee; Chiloé is a bus ride from Puerto Montt. Give it four nights.
