Valparaíso is the Chile most people hope to find in Santiago: a walkable, hilly port with a UNESCO-listed old quarter, sea views from every staircase and murals on almost every wall. The best of it is free, from wandering Cerro Alegre and Cerro Concepción to the open-air mural museum on Cerro Bellavista, and a funicular ride costs about ₹97. Fly into Santiago, take the airport bus to Pajaritos and a coach to the coast in under two hours. Two or three days covers the hills, Neruda's house and a ride along the bay to Viña del Mar.

Mistakes to avoid
- UK travel advice (updated 9 Oct 2026) has no area of Chile it advises against, but says muggings happen frequently in Santiago and Valparaíso, increasingly with guns and knives, and names Valparaíso for scams. Keep phones out of sight at viewpoints and use an app car after dark.
- UK travel advice says Chile often has severe forest fires that spread rapidly, and that major earthquakes are a risk. Follow evacuation orders and read your hotel's safety instructions.
- Violent protests happen in Chilean cities, especially on Friday afternoons and evenings. UK advice is to avoid all demonstrations.
Ways to spend less
- The best things here are free: the cerro walks, the lookouts and the open-air mural museum.
- Eat your main meal at lunch: a set menu is about ₹820 and many places stop serving it at 15:30.
- Palacio Baburizza is free on the second Sunday of the month.
