Chachapoyas
A cloud-forest fortress bigger than Machu Picchu, the third-tallest waterfall on earth, and a tenth of the visitors.
Kuélap is a walled citadel built by the Chachapoya a thousand years before the Inca arrived, sitting at 3,000 m above a cloud-forest valley in northern Peru. It is larger than Machu Picchu by volume and receives a small fraction of the people. Gocta falls, an hour away, is 771 m high and was not documented by the outside world until 2005. Northern Peru is a long way from Cusco, which is precisely why it is still like this.
Instead of Machu Picchu only. Best for solo travellers, couples and groups. Best months: Apr–Oct.
When to go
May to September is the dry season and the only reliable window for the trails. October to April brings heavy cloud-forest rain, landslides on the access roads, and closed viewpoints.

Eating
Manageable but not automatic — the menú del día is usually meat-based, though almost every place will make a vegetarian version if asked. Potatoes, quinoa, beans, rice, avocado and soups are staples. 'Soy vegetariano, sin carne ni pollo' — the 'ni pollo' matters.

What goes wrong here, and how to do it cheaper
What goes wrong:
The Kuélap cable car has been suspended more than once for long periods. Confirm its status before you build a plan around it.
Cloud-forest rain between October and April makes the access roads genuinely unreliable.
Altitude at Kuélap is just over 3,000 m — not extreme, but enough to matter if you have flown in from the coast that morning.
How to do it cheaper:
Northern Peru is a fifth of the price of the Cusco circuit for sites of comparable importance.
Stay in Cocachimba rather than town — you wake up facing the waterfall and start the walk an hour earlier.
The Leymebamba mummy museum is one of South America's great collections and you will likely have it to yourself.
