Tallinn gets most of Estonia's visitors; in 2025, 70% of foreign tourists who stayed overnight did so in Tallinn and 7% in Tartu county. Tartu is the country's intellectual capital, with a 17th-century university, wooden suburbs, and the Estonian National Museum. It is a two-hour train or bus from Tallinn and easy to walk. Two days is right, three in summer if you want Lake Peipus.
When to go
June to August is the season: average temperatures 16-18°C, long light evenings, students' summer events. May and September are mild (around 11-12°C) and quieter. December to February average below freezing (about -4°C) and days are short, but the museums are open and prices are lowest.
