Bacalar gives you the turquoise water people go to Tulum for, on a 42 km freshwater lagoon that sargassum does not reach. Swim from the free public balneario, take a shared boat to the Pirates' Channel and the stromatolites, and swim in Cenote Azul for 35 MXN. ADO buses from Cancún take about 5.5 hours, the Tren Maya stops in town, and Chetumal airport is about 40 km south. Two or three nights is enough; book ahead from November to April.

Why Bacalar, instead of Tulum: A long freshwater lagoon in bands of blue, with an 18th-century fort, cenotes and no sargassum.

Mistakes to avoid

  • UK travel advice (updated 20 Oct 2026) has no advice against travel to southern Quintana Roo, but warns to be very cautious after dark in downtown Cancún, Tulum and Playa del Carmen, which you may pass through.
  • Hurricane season runs June to November (UK advice); September and October are the wettest months here. Check forecasts and bus or train status before you travel.
  • Stromatolites are living and fragile. Do not touch or stand on them, and swim only at the spots your boat or the cenote staff point out.

Ways to spend less

  • The public balneario is free and Cenote Azul is 35 MXN, so a lagoon day can cost almost nothing.
  • The Tren Maya and ADO both stop in town, so you do not need a rental car.
  • May to September is cheaper, and the freshwater lagoon is free of sargassum all year.
