Lake Atitlán gives you the volcano views and Maya highland culture people go to Antigua for, spread across a dozen lakeside villages instead of one busy old town. Public lanchas link the villages for roughly Q10-35 a hop, dorm beds run about US$10-15 and a market lunch is Q20-40. Take a shared shuttle from Guatemala City airport (3.5-4 hours) or from Antigua (2.5-3.5 hours) to Panajachel. Stay three or four days, base yourself in one village and move by boat.

Mistakes to avoid
- UK travel advice (updated 13 Aug 2026) does not advise against travel to the lake, but reports armed attacks and robberies on most tourist routes between Guatemala City, Antigua, Tikal, Petén and Lake Atitlán. Travel by day with an established shuttle company.
- UK advice says to avoid public buses because of gang attacks on drivers, and that express kidnappings are common, often after hailing a taxi in the street. Use hotel or radio taxis and pre-booked shuttles.
- On volcano and ridge hikes, UK advice warns that local tour organisers underestimate the risks and there is no mountain rescue service. Hike with a guide, never alone, and not in storms.
Ways to spend less
- Public lanchas (about Q10-35) are the cheapest way to see the lake; you do not need a private boat tour.
- Panajachel dorms average under US$10, and market comedores serve lunch for Q20-40.
- The Sololá Friday market and walking San Juan La Laguna cost nothing.
